Exterior Carpentry

The Service

Outdoor timber built for British weather

Exterior carpentry takes a beating — rain, frost and sun all conspire against it. Getting the material, fixings and detailing right is the difference between a deck that lasts a season and one that lasts decades.

PRM Carpentry builds decking, gates and fencing in both timber and composite across Hampshire — properly supported, correctly fixed and finished to shrug off the weather. We build it the way we'd build it for our own garden.

From a raised composite deck to a set of bespoke oak gates, you get outdoor carpentry that looks superb and stands the test of time.

Exterior carpentry in Hampshire, explained

Outdoor timber has a harder life than anything inside the house. Rain, sun, frost and ground contact all work on it, so exterior carpentry is as much about detailing as it is about materials. Good drainage, the right fixings, proper ground clearance and well-treated or naturally durable timber are what make a deck, fence or gate last.

PRM Carpentry builds decking, fencing, gates, pergolas and garden structures across Hampshire, including Southampton, Winchester, Eastleigh and Chandler's Ford. We work with both timber and composite decking and can advise on which suits your garden, budget and how much maintenance you are happy to do.

Decking is our most common exterior job. Timber decking costs less up front and can look beautiful, but it needs regular cleaning and treatment. Composite decking costs more but needs far less upkeep. Our guide to timber vs composite decking gives an honest comparison, and decking installation in Hampshire covers what to expect from the job. Whichever you choose, the frame underneath matters most, so we build substructures with proper joist spacing, ventilation and fixings.

We also make made-to-measure garden gates, which fit openings properly and last far longer than off-the-shelf gates. See made-to-measure garden gates vs off-the-shelf for the differences.

FAQs

exterior carpentry FAQs

Is timber or composite decking better?

Composite needs much less maintenance and lasts well, but costs more up front. Timber is cheaper to install and looks natural, but needs cleaning and treating regularly. Our decking comparison covers the details.

Do I need planning permission for decking?

Most ground-level decking does not need planning permission, but raised decking over 30cm above the ground usually does. Check with your local council if you are unsure, or ask us when we quote.

How long does it take to build a deck?

A typical garden deck is often built in a few days, depending on its size, height and the groundwork needed.

Do you replace fence panels and posts?

Yes. We replace individual panels and posts or build new fence runs, using concrete or timber posts and gravel boards to keep timber off the ground.

Do you build garden gates?

Yes. We make and hang made-to-measure timber gates to fit your opening, with proper framing so they do not drop over time.
