Looking After a Timber Deck Through a British Winter

A British winter is hard on timber decking: months of rain, leaves sitting wet on the boards, and the odd freeze. A couple of hours of care in autumn is the difference between a deck that sails through and one that comes out in spring slimy, black-spotted and starting to soften.

Clear and wash before the weather turns

Leaves are the enemy. Left to rot on the boards they hold moisture against the timber, stain it, and feed the algae that makes decks treacherous. Sweep regularly through autumn, then give the deck a proper wash with a stiff brush and a deck cleaner, working along the grain. A pressure washer is fine on a fan setting held well back; blasting at close range furs up the surface and shortens the boards' life.

Let it dry, then protect it

Once the deck has had a couple of dry days, apply a decking oil or protector. This is the single most skipped step and the most valuable: the oil slows water uptake, which is what drives splitting, warping and rot. Do not seal a damp deck; trapped moisture does more harm than no coating at all. Autumn application means the boards go into winter protected rather than naked.

Check the structure while you are out there

• Lift any loose boards and refix them with screws, not nails
• Probe the cut ends and joist tops with a screwdriver for softness
• Make sure water can escape: clear gaps between boards and any blocked drainage under the deck
• Check handrails and steps are solid, because a wobbly rail fails when someone grabs it on a frosty morning

Winter rules

Keep the deck swept, especially after storms. If algae does take hold and the surface gets slippery, scrub it with deck cleaner rather than salting it, as salt and metal fixings are not friends. Never chip ice off with a spade; you will gouge the boards. Sand or grip strips on steps are a kinder fix for frost.

Spring is for inspection, not surprises
