Five Questions to Ask Before You Book a Kitchen Fitter

A new kitchen is one of the biggest investments you will make in your home, and the fitting matters as much as the units. The same kitchen can look like fitted furniture or like flat-pack, depending entirely on who fits it. Here are five questions worth asking before you book anyone.

1. Do you scribe or use filler strips?

Walls are rarely straight. A good fitter scribes end panels, worktops and plinths to the wall so everything sits dead tight. A rushed job hides gaps with filler strips and silicone. Ask to see close-up photos of previous end panels against a wall.

2. How do you handle worktop templating and joints?

Worktops are where budget kitchens come unstuck. Ask who templates the tops, how joints are planned so they land away from sinks and hobs where possible, and what happens if a top arrives damaged.

3. Will you set out before you start?

Setting out, marking every unit, appliance and service on the walls before a single screw goes in, is the difference between measuring twice and hoping for the best. If a fitter does not mention setting out, ask why not.

4. What is included in the quote?

• Appliance integration and door alignment, or units only?
• End panels, cornice, pelmet and plinth, or carcasses only?
• Making good, silicone and a clean handover, or is that extra?

5. Can I speak to a recent customer?

Any fitter who takes pride in the work will happily point you at a recent job. Ten minutes on the phone with a past customer tells you more than any brochure.
