Skirting Boards and Architrave: Choosing Profiles That Suit Your Home

Skirting and architrave are the frames around every room, and the profile you choose changes how the whole house feels. Get it right and nobody notices, in the best way. Get it wrong and something feels off that you cannot quite name.

Match the age of the house

Period properties want taller skirting and moulded profiles: ogee, torus and Victorian-style boards at 120mm and up. A 70mm chamfered board in a Victorian terrace looks mean. Modern homes suit the opposite: square edge, pencil round or simple chamfered profiles sit cleanly with contemporary doors and flush details.

The main profiles, translated

• Square edge: a plain rectangle, the modern default, easy to paint and keep clean
• Pencil round: square with a softened top edge, forgiving in family homes
• Chamfered: a single angled cut, tidy and unfussy
• Torus: a classic rounded moulding, suits most 20th century homes
• Ogee: an S-curve moulding, the traditional choice for period rooms

MDF or timber?

Moisture-resistant MDF is stable, comes primed, and is the sensible choice for most painted work. Real timber costs more and can move with the seasons, but it is the right call for stained finishes and for period properties where you want crisp mouldings that MDF cannot quite copy. In bathrooms and utility rooms, always use moisture-resistant board at minimum.

Fitting matters more than profile

The best profile badly fitted looks worse than a plain one fitted well. Corners should be scribed on long runs rather than mitred, because internal corners are rarely square and scribed joints stay tight as the house moves. Boards should be fixed to solid grounds, gaps caulked once, and mitres on external corners glued and pinned so they do not open up.
