Home Office Joinery: Desks and Storage Built to Fit
How fitted home office joinery works: desk heights, storage, cable routes, materials and rough costs for Hampshire homes from a local carpenter.

Working from home has turned plenty of spare bedrooms, box rooms and landings into offices, and a lot of them are still running on a kitchen chair and a flat-pack desk that wobbles every time you type. Fitted joinery changes that. A desk and storage built to the exact room makes better use of awkward corners, keeps cables out of sight and gives you a space that feels like part of the house rather than a temporary fix. Here is what to think about before you commission one.
Why fitted beats freestanding in a small room
Most home offices in Hampshire are not purpose-built rooms. They are third bedrooms in 1930s semis, box rooms in Victorian terraces or the space under the eaves in a converted loft. Walls are rarely square, skirting and picture rails get in the way, and there is often a chimney breast or sloping ceiling to work around. Freestanding furniture comes in fixed sizes, so you end up with gaps at each end that collect dust and lost paperwork.
Fitted pieces are scribed to the walls, so they sit tight from end to end and floor to ceiling if you want them to. That usually means more storage in the same footprint and a much tidier finish. Our bespoke joinery service covers everything from a single alcove desk to a full wall of cupboards and shelving.
Getting the desk right
The desk is the part you will use every day, so the measurements matter more than the look. A few points we check on every job:
- Height: around 720 to 750mm suits most adults, but we can set it to suit you and your chair.
- Depth: 600mm is a comfortable minimum for a laptop and a monitor; 700mm or more if you use two screens.
- Knee space: leave clear width under the worktop and avoid drawer units where your legs need to go.
- Cable management: grommets, a rear cable channel and a socket position planned before anything is fixed.
- Support: a long span needs a hidden steel or a timber batten fixed into the wall so it does not sag over time.
If the desk sits in an alcove, it can be fixed on three sides with no legs at all, which keeps the floor clear and makes cleaning easy. On a single wall, a run of base units with a worktop over them gives you storage and a solid, level surface.
Storage that earns its space
Good office storage is about matching the space to what you actually keep. Open shelves suit books and things you reach for daily. Cupboards with doors hide printers, routers and the inevitable box of chargers. Deep drawers work for files, while shallow ones are better for stationery. We will usually ask you to empty out what you have before we design anything, because it is the simplest way to size shelves and drawers correctly.
Height is your friend in a small room. Shelving or cupboards that run up to the ceiling make use of space that would otherwise be empty, and a run of overhead cupboards above the desk can keep the working surface clear. The same principles apply as with living room alcoves, which we cover in our guide to alcove shelving and cupboard proportions.
In loft rooms, the low space under the eaves is ideal for pull-out storage or low cupboards, leaving the full-height part of the room for the desk and chair.
Materials and finishes
Most fitted office furniture is made from MDF or birch plywood for the carcasses, with a painted finish on doors and panels. MDF paints beautifully and stays stable, which matters in houses where heating comes on and off through the day. For the desk top, solid oak or another hardwood gives a hard-wearing surface that can be sanded and re-oiled in years to come. Laminate worktops are a cheaper option and very durable.
Ironmongery is worth spending a little on. Soft-close hinges and full-extension drawer runners make a real difference to how the furniture feels to use every day.
Rough costs and timescales
Every job differs, so treat these as rough guides only. A simple alcove desk with a shelf or two above might run from a few hundred pounds to around a thousand. A full wall of desk, cupboards and shelving in painted MDF with a hardwood top will often sit in the low to mid thousands, depending on size, materials and the number of doors and drawers. Most fitted office projects take a few days on site once the pieces are made, and we will give you a clear timescale at quote stage.
It also helps to involve an electrician early if you want sockets or USB points moved to suit the desk, so everything lines up when the joinery goes in.
