Flat-Pack vs Rigid Kitchen Units: What Actually Matters at Fitting Time

The flat-pack versus rigid debate is usually framed as a quality question, and it is, but not always in the way showrooms present it. Here is the view from the person who actually has to put the units on your wall.

What the difference actually is

Rigid units arrive glued and dowelled from the factory, ready to hang. Flat-pack units arrive in a box and are assembled on site with cams, dowels and screws. Both can be excellent and both can be flimsy: the carcass material and edging matter more than how the box arrives. An 18mm melamine-faced board with properly glued edges is a good carcass however it was put together.

Where rigid earns its money

• Speed: a rigid kitchen can be a day or more faster to fit, which shows up in the labour bill
• Squareness: factory-glued units are reliably square, so doors align with less fiddling
• Durability: glued joints do not loosen the way cam fixings can after years of door slams

Where flat-pack holds its own

Flat-pack is not the enemy. It is cheaper to buy and cheaper to deliver, and for awkward Hampshire cottages with narrow stairs and tight corners, a unit that goes upstairs in a box and gets built in the room is sometimes the only practical option. The catch is assembly quality: a flat-pack unit built in a hurry with cams half-tightened will rack out of square, and every door on it will fight the fitter.

What to spend the money on

If the budget is tight, spend on hinges, drawer runners and worktops before carcass construction. Soft-close hardware and a solid worktop are what you touch every day. A well-assembled flat-pack carcass with good hardware will outlast a rigid carcass with bargain hinges.
