Bespoke Joinery for Awkward Spaces: Alcoves, Eaves and Under-Stairs

Every house has them: the alcoves either side of the chimney breast, the void under the stairs, the eaves in a loft room. Furniture shops do not sell anything that fits them, which is exactly why they are where bespoke joinery earns its name.

Why awkward spaces are worth the effort

In most Hampshire semis and terraces, the alcoves and under-stairs void add up to the footprint of a small wardrobe or two. Fitted properly, that is storage you currently do not have, in rooms that are already full. It also finishes a room: an alcove unit with shelves above looks like the house was designed that way, because suddenly it was.

Alcove units: the classic

The standard brief is cupboards below, shelving above, fitted wall to wall and floor to ceiling. The details that separate good from average: scribing the side panels to walls that are never straight, matching or deliberately contrasting the skirting, deciding door styles that suit the room, and planning cable routes for the TV or lamp that will inevitably live there. Painted MDF keeps costs sensible; oak or veneer lifts it into furniture.

Under-stairs: drawers beat doors

A door into the under-stairs void means crawling in with a torch. Drawers on full-extension runners, or a pull-out unit for coats and shoes, bring the contents to you. The angled line of the stairs suits a run of drawers and cupboards stepped to the pitch. It is more joinery than a simple door, and worth every penny in daily use.

Eaves and loft rooms

The low triangle behind a loft room's knee wall is usually dead. Low cupboards or drawers built to the slope turn it into serious storage, and shelving built between the purlins makes a feature of the structure. Measure twice: lofts are the least square spaces in any house, and every unit is a one-off by definition.
